A former executive director of the Farm Products Council of Canada and Manitoba Rural Adaptation Council will again try to reclaim southeastern Manitoba for the federal Liberals.
Terry Hayward of Anola, Man. was named Wednesday as the Liberals’ candidate in the federal riding of Provencher, at a nomination meeting featuring party leader Justin Trudeau.
The riding was held for over 12 years by Conservative MP and cabinet minister Vic Toews, who stepped down from the Commons in July. A byelection date hasn’t yet been set.
Hayward retired in 2006 after 33 years with the federal government, including stints with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and, starting in 2000, with the Farm Products Council in Ottawa.

Hayward returned to Manitoba, served for a year and a half as MRAC’s executive director and has since set up his own consulting business.
Provencher covers southeastern Manitoba outside Winnipeg, bordered partly by the Red River in the west, Ontario in the east and the U.S. in the south, and including communities such as Steinbach, Morris, Emerson, Niverville, Lac du Bonnet and St-Pierre-Jolys.
Hayward placed third against Toews in the 2011 federal election, polling 2,645 votes compared to 27,820 for Toews and 7,051 for the New Democrats’ Al Mackling.
The last Liberal to hold Provencher was David Iftody, from 1993 to 2000. The Progressive Conservatives’ Jake Epp was the riding’s MP from 1972 until his resignation in 1993. — AGCanada.com Network
