An industry group representing oat and barley growers, processors and marketers in Ontario has joined the Grain Growers of Canada.
The Oat and Barley Council of Ontario (OBCO), headquartered at Grimsby, just east of Hamilton, includes farmer members who “bring experience to our organization on the issues facing all areas of the supply chain regarding their commodity and we look forward to that input,” GGC president Doug Robertson said in a release Monday.
“Their communicative forum organization fits well with our vision, and they feel there is value in belonging to a strong policy-orientated national farm organization,” said Robertson, who farms at Carstairs, Alta.

Manitoba Agriculture issued its final crop report of 2025, showing the overall provincewide harvest at 97 per cent complete as of Oct. 20. Nearly all major crops have finished combining, with 37 per cent of Manitoba’s sunflowers finished, plus 71 per cent of grain corn and small amounts of soybeans and potatoes left to do.
“Over the last years, consumer recognition in the value of our crops has been increasing in importance across the country,” said Carl Coleman, chair of OBCO and head of Bramhill Seeds at Palmerston, Ont.
“Oat and barley producers are keenly aware of how industry forum and communication benefit the advancement of national policies and crop success.”
The OBCO said it believes the Ottawa-based GGC to be “well placed to advance common interests” on such issues as co-ordinated public and private research; production and consumer information-sharing; safety nets that work in the grain sector; and “provision of a representative voice to the industry.”
