Funeral services were held Thursday in Medicine Hat, Alta. for Arnold Tremere, a retired executive director of the Canadian International Grains Institute, who died Sunday of cancer at age 67.
Tremere was CIGI’s executive director in Winnipeg from 1989 to 2002, following a seven-year stint as the institute’s first director of feed and technology. The institute, funded by the federal government and ag industry, promotes Canadian field crop industries in international and domestic markets through educational programming and technical activities.
Tremere was raised on a grain and beef cattle operation at Scotsguard, Sask., about 90 km southwest of Swift Current. He earned his M.Sc. from the University of Saskatchewan in 1964 and his Ph.D. from Cornell University at Ithaca, N.Y.

According to his obituary in the Medicine Hat News,Tremere’s career began in the feed industry as a nutritionist and director of nutrition and research in the agriculture division at Maple Leaf Mills in Toronto.
Before joining CIGI in 1982, Tremere was the general manager for the western region for Maple Leaf Mills, working out of its Calgary office. He retired to Medicine Hat, Alta. in 2002.
Donations in Tremere’s memory can be directed to the Medicine Hat Cancer Clinic or the palliative care program at Medicine Hat Regional Hospital.
