The Canadian Wheat Board’s former head of malting barley technical services and market development is the new president and CEO of the Brewing and Malting Barley Research Institute.
Michael Brophy was named to the post at the end of August, institute chairman Ed McCallum said Wednesday in a release.
The Winnipeg-based institute evaluates new malting barley varieties and funding research for malting barley development. It represents Canadian brewers Labatt, Molson, Moosehead and Sleeman, malting companies Malteurop, Prairie Malt and Rahr Malting, and U.S. brewers Anheuser-Busch and Sierra Nevada.

“BMBRI will benefit from Michael’s 15 years of experience in the malting barley development and marketing industry in Western Canada,” McCallum said. “This will allow BMBRI to maintain its focus and address future challenges in malting barley variety development, research and communications activities on behalf of our members and the wider industry.”
Brophy’s work also included involvement with organizations such as the Master Brewers Association of the Americas, Canadian Malting Barley Technical Centre, Western Grains Research Foundation, Prairie Grain Development Committee, Prairie Recommending Committee for Oats and Barley, the Western Grains Standards Committee barley group and the Barley Development Council.
