Valcartier, Que. turkey farmer Brent Montgomery has been appointed the new vice-chairperson of the national council supervising supply management for poultry and eggs.
Federal Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz announced Montgomery’s appointment to the National Farm Products Council on Wednesday, for a term running to April 29, 2011.
Montgomery, the mayor of the Saint-Gabriel-de-Valcartier municipality, has also previously served as chairman of the Canadian Turkey Marketing Agency and administrator of the Fédération des producteurs de volailles du Québec.
Ritz also named Lise Bergeron of Montreal to a three-year term on the council. She has previously been vice-chair of la Régie des marchés agricoles et alimentaires du Québec and secretary general of the Fédération des producteurs de porcs du Québec.

The NFPC supervises the four national marketing agencies for Canadian chicken, turkey, eggs and broiler-hatching eggs, each of which implements and administers marketing plans, allocates production quotas and generates revenue through levies. The council also supervises the operation of the Canadian Beef Cattle Research, Market Development and Promotion Agency.
Ritz last month named William Smirle, an Ontario dairyman and former school principal, as the council’s chairman.
