Global Markets: CPKC breaks January grain records

Glacier FarmMedia – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

     – Canadian Pacific Kansas City announced on Monday it broke its grain shipping record for the month of January last month. CPKC transported 2.395 million tonnes, surpassing its own January monthly record from 2023. January’s 24,688 carloads was also an all-time high for the month, also breaking the record from 2023. At the midway point of the 2025-26 crop year, CPKC shipped more than 15.1 million tonnes of grain and grain products, the largest total in five years.

     – United States President Donald Trump announced on Monday a new trade deal with India which would slash U.S. tariffs on Indian imports from 50 per cent to 18 per cent. In exchange, India would reduce trade barriers and stop buying Russian crude oil. The move comes a week after India and the European Union reached a new trade agreement. On social media, Trump said that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi committed to buying more than US$500 billion worth of U.S. goods including energy, technology and agricultural products. Modi also thanked Trump in a social media post.

     – Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said on Tuesday he instructed the country’s foreign minister to “pursue fair and equitable negotiations” with the U.S. Pezeshkian said the decision was made with the support from other nations in the Middle East. The U.S. has yet to confirm if talks will take place, but Turkey had wanted talks to take place there later this week as U.S. Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff travels in the region. Foreign ministers from Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have also been invited to attend the talks, if they happen.
