Glacier FarmMedia — The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.
- The European Union has given a provisional go-ahead to sign a trade deal with South America’s Mercosur group, despite opposition from several countries. Austria, Belgium, France, Hungary, Ireland and Poland all abstained from the vote. At least 15 countries, representing 65 per cent of the EU’s population, voted in favour. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz called Friday’s vote a “milestone” and said the deal would be good for Germany and for Europe. Meanwhile, farmers in France, Belgium and Poland have launched protests against the agreement, saying it will lead to a flood of cheap food imports.
- Canada’s unemployment rate rose 0.3 percentage points in December from the previous month to 6.8 per cent, as more people looked for work, reported Statistics Canada. Employment was little changed at 60.9 per cent with 8,200 new jobs added to the economy.
- The United States military has boarded another oil tanker in the Caribbean Sea. The Olina is the fifth tanker seized by U.S. forces tied to sanctions on oil vessels moving to and from Venezuela. Details on the capture were not immediately provided.
