Global Markets: Retail sales down in September

Glacier FarmMedia | MarketsFarm – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

  • Retail sales in September fell 0.7 per cent at C$69.8 billion, Statistics Canada reported on Friday. Sales at motor vehicle and parts dealers dropped 2.9 per cent in September. However, gas stations and fuel vendors saw a 1.9 per cent increase that month. StatCan’s preliminary estimate for October retail sales is for them to remain largely unchanged.
  • The leaders of the two largest economies will skip the G20 summit in Johannesburg, reports said on Friday. United States President Donald Trump won’t attend as he continued his claims white farmers are being persecuted in South Africa. Chinese President Xi Jinping will be absent, citing his government’s cutbacks in foreign travel. The two-day summit of the 20 largest national economies is set for Nov 22-23.

  • As the COP30 United Nations Climate Summit in Belem, Brazil is set to wrap up on Friday, there’s strong disagreement over its final communique. The draft excluded any references to fossil fuels as Brazil wants to drop references about a global “roadmap” to shift away from oil, gas and coal. As the two-week summit ends this evening, a significant portion of the countries demanded the inclusion of a plan to deal with fossil fuels.
  • Reports said on Thursday that the Canadian and Alberta governments have made progress towards a deal on a pipeline to the Pacific coast. The CBC reported that if Alberta conducts consultations with Indigenous communities and can reach an agreement with the British Columbia government, then the feds would consider granting limited exemptions for oil tankers. The B.C. government remains opposed to the pipeline through the province’s northwest.
