Canadian dollar and business outlook

Glacier FarmMedia — The Canadian dollar was steady Thursday morning, showing little movement despite a rally in crude oil.

     At 9:00 a.m. CDT the Canadian dollar was trading at US$0.7144 or US$1=C$1.3998 which compares with Wednesday’s close of US$0.7145 or US$1=C$1.3996.

     Retail sales in Canada increased 1.0 per cent in August, to C$70.4 billion, reported Statistics Canada. Core retail sales, which exclude gasoline stations and fuel vendors and motor vehicle and parts dealers, were up 1.1 per cent.

     Crude oil climbed higher after the United States imposed fresh sanctions on Russian oil suppliers. West Texas Intermediate was up by 4.91 per cent at US$61.37 per barrel.

     The TSX was up by 231.34 points at 8:51 CDT to trade at 30,214.32.
