Cattle futures on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange were mixed Wednesday, with gains in the feeder market and a steady tone in the live cattle market as values retreated from earlier advances.

The April live cattle contract was down by 0.275 cents per pound at 195.725 cents at the close.

April feeder cattle futures were up by 0.275 cents per pound at 265.250 cents per pound.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture reported wholesale boxed beef prices were softer Wednesday morning, with choice boxes down $1.52 at $320.94 per hundredweight and select boxes down $2.07 at $310.14.

Lean hog prices were stronger, with the April contract up 1.350 cents per pound at 94.325 cents.

A major winter storm bringing heavy snow to some major U.S. hog producing regions this week accounted for some of the strength, as buyers looked to pay up to secure animals before the weather hits.
