  • Canada’s 13 provincial and territorial premiers are in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday to meet with United States lawmakers and special interest groups. Led by Ontario Premier Doug Ford, the current chair of the Council of the Federation, the premiers will try to drum up support against the tariffs President Donald Trump plans to impose on Canada.

  • The consumer price index in the U.S. rose to an annualized three per cent in January, up from 2.9 per cent December, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on Wednesday. That marked the largest increase since August 2023. The bureau said core consumer prices increased to 3.3 per cent last month compared to 3.2 per cent in December when the volatile food and energy categories are excluded.

 

  • Former RCMP deputy commissioner Kevin Brosseau was appointed as Canada’s “fentanyl czar” on Tuesday, in the Canadian government’s move to placate Trump. Brosseau is to oversee Canadian efforts “to detect, disrupt and dismantle the fentanyl trade” in co-operation with U.S. authorities.

 

  • U.S. Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth told the Ukraine Defence Contact Group on Wednesday that the Trump administration opposes Ukraine’s bid to join NATO. Also, Hegseth said the European Union needs to carry more of the burden to support Ukraine in its war effort against Russia, and that Ukraine must forgo all notions of returning to its pre-2014 borders.
