Global Markets: Tariffs to be implemented on Tuesday

– United States President Donald Trump announced he will impose 25 per cent tariffs on Canadian and Mexican goods imported into the U.S. starting Tuesday. In response, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Saturday he will respond in kind with US$155 billion worth of U.S. imports into Canada. On Tuesday, US$30 billion of U.S. goods, including groceries and small appliances, will receive additional levies, while the other US$125 billion of goods, including vehicles, will be tariffed three weeks later. Some provinces have responded to the U.S. tariffs by removing American alcoholic beverages from stores, while Canadian consumers are making efforts to purchase items made in Canada. Trudeau and Trump already met this morning and are set to meet this afternoon.

– U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, in his first foreign trip since his appointment, told Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino on Sunday to rid the Panama Canal of Chinese influence or risk retaliation from the U.S. Trump believes that China’s presence in the waterway violates a treaty which turned over the canal to Panama in 1999. Afterwards, Mulino told the media his discussions with Rubio were “respective” and “positive” with no impression that the U.S. wanted to threaten the treaty or take the canal by force.

– An explosion at an upscale residential block in Moscow killed one person and injured four others on Monday morning. Russia’s Investigative Committee said it will open a criminal probe into the blast. Media reports said one of the wounded was Armen Sarkisyan, the founder of a volunteer battalion fighting against Ukraine, where he is on a wanted list. Another report said Sarkisyan’s bodyguard was the fatality in the explosion.
