- Hundreds of armoured police officers attempted to remove protesters and dismantle a pro-Palestinian encampment at the University of California, Los Angeles, Thursday morning. Tensions at college campuses have intensified in recent weeks as demonstrators denounce Israel’s actions in Gaza and have called for universities to stop doing business with Israel or companies supporting the war.
- Canada reported an international trade deficit of C$2.3 billion in March, as exports fell by 5.3 per cent and imports were only down by 1.2 per cent. The deficit was the largest since June 2023 and compares with the C$476 million surplus reported in February, according to a report from Statistics Canada.
- Chinese President Xi Jinping will be in Europe next week for the first time in five years, with trade and geopolitical relations at the top of the agenda.
