Global Markets: Canadian job vacancies, earnings up

– Statistics Canada reported on Friday that the number of job vacancies in the country increased to 656,700 in February, up 21,800 from January but down 178,400 from February 2023. The additional job vacancies were mostly seen in the transportation and warehousing sector. However, the job vacancy rate saw little change at 3.7 per cent, while the number of employees receiving pay and benefits from their employer declined by 17,700 or 0.1 per cent. However, for the second straight month, average weekly earnings rose by 0.5 per cent from the month before at C$1,232. Average weekly earnings also grew by 4.5 per cent compared to February 2023.

– The United States economy grew by an annualizeed rate of 1.6 per cent during the first quarter of 2024, according to the Commerce Department, below average trade expectations. Growth during the quarter was largely supported by consumer spending. By comparison, the economy expanded by 3.4 per cent in Q4 2023.

– U.S. officials said Wednesday that Ukraine has started to use long-range ballistic missiles secretly supplied by them. The missiles were contained in a US$300 million military aid package sent to Ukraine which U.S. President Joe Biden approved last month. They were used for the first time on April 17 against a Russian airfield in Crimea. Ukraine has committed to only use the weapons within its own borders and not in Russia.

– The U.S. Supreme Court will hear opening arguments later today over whether former U.S. President Donald Trump should be immune for actions he took during his time in the Oval Office. At the same time, the criminal case against Trump for providing hush money payments continues in New York City. The Supreme Court’s case is not expected to affect Trump’s criminal trial as the payments took place during the 2016 presidential election campaign.
