- A narrow band of North America is set to experience a total solar eclipse on Monday, including parts of southern Ontario, Quebec, and Atlantic Canada. The eclipse will make its way across the continent from Mazatlán, Mexico to the eastern shore of Newfoundland and Labrador. Anyone watching the eclipse is strongly advised to wear protective solar glasses and to not look at the sun with the naked eye.

- Although negotiations between Hamas and Israel pushed through the weekend in Cairo, no substantial progress had been made according to reports on Monday. However, Egyptian officials said some concessions were made by both sides. After six months, fighting between Israeli Defence Forces and Hamas has led to the deaths of up to 33,000 civilians, and more than half of Gaza’s population being displaced.
- Russia accused Ukraine on Sunday of attacking the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station with drones. The station has been occupied by Russian forces for much of the war. Onsite officials with the International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed there was an attack. Ukraine denied launching the drone strikes.
- Statistics Canada reported on Monday that retail sales in January of C$56.3 billion increased 2.5 per cent from a year ago. The Retail Commodity Survey found increases in 11 of the 18 commodity classes with the largest gain in new motor vehicles sales at eight per cent. The biggest decline was in automotive and household fuel sales at seven per cent.
