Global Markets: Earthquake, landslides strike Taiwan

– A 7.2-magnitude earthquake killed nine people and injured more than 800 in Taiwan on Wednesday, the country’s strongest in 25 years. Buildings toppled in the cities of Taipei and Hualien, while landslides were triggered in rural areas. Chinese state media said the earthquake was felt in the country’s southeast, while Japan and The Philippines posted tsunami warnings which were later lifted.

– NATO is debating a plan to provide more dependable military support to Ukraine in coming years, according to Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg. The plan would have NATO co-ordinate the Ukraine Defence Contact Group, a group of 50 countries drumming up weapons and ammunition for Ukraine, rather than the U.S. European Command. On Wednesday, Ukraine lowered its conscription age from 27 to 25 in an effort to replenish its armed forces.

– Indigo Books and Music Inc. will go private after agreeing to an offer from a holding company run by its largest shareholder. Trilogy Retail Holdings Inc. and Trilogy Investments L.P. will pay C$2.50 per share in cash for the stake in Indigo they do not own. The companies are owned by Gerald Schwartz, the husband of Indigo founder and chief executive Heather Raisman. The transaction will be voted on in May and if passed, Indigo will be delisted from the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX) soon after.

– TD Bank and Google Cloud have agreed to a “multi-year strategic relationship” on Wednesday that will see the bank use Google’s infrastructure. Google would work with TD on app development and would allow the bank to change its products to meet the needs of customers. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
