– Protests against the federal carbon tax interrupted traffic after the levy rose by 23 per cent on Monday. There were at least 15 protests across Canada, including one on Parliament Hill but mainly on major highways. Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Andrew Furey, the only Liberal premier in Canada, wrote a letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau asking for an emergency meeting to discuss alternatives. At a press conference announcing funding for a new national school food program, Trudeau accused premiers of not coming up with viable alternatives and reminding that the Canadian Carbon Rebate will go up, as well.

– Seven international aid workers for charity group World Central Kitchen, including a Canada-United States dual citizen, were killed in an air strike on Monday while delivering food in central Gaza. The group, founded by celebrity chef Jose Andres, unloaded three aid ships from Cyprus earlier in the day. After the attack, the charity has now suspended operations in Gaza. The Israeli military said there will be an independent investigation into the incident.
– Health officials in Texas said on Monday one individual has been diagnosed with avian flu, tied to the recent discovery of the virus in dairy cows. Officials added that the risk to the general public remains low as the person’s only symptom was eye redness and is currently being treated with an antiviral drug. Over the past week, cows in five states, Texas, Kansas, New Mexico, Idaho and Michigan, were discovered to have contracted the virus.
– Former U.S. President and presumptive Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump posted a US$175 million bond on Monday in his civil fraud case. The payment will halt the collection of the US$454 million Trump owes and prevents the state of New York from seizing his assets while Trump appeals the ruling. Meanwhile, in Trump’s criminal case, Judge Juan M. Merchan expanded a gag order to include members of Merchan’s family after Trump falsely accused the judge’s daughter, a Democratic political consultant, of making money if Trump is convicted.
