– Statistics Canada (StatCan) reported on Wednesday that Canada had a trade deficit of C$312 million in December, a figure which surprised analysts who had expected a C$1 billion surplus. Total exports were down 1.9 per cent during the month, mostly due to fewer motor vehicle and parts exports as well as fewer crude oil shipments. Total imports were up 0.2 per cent. Canada’s surplus in November was downwardly revised C$510 million at C$1.06 billion.

– United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken will meet with Israeli leaders later today, the day after Hamas released a plan for a new ceasefire and hostage deal. The framework put forward by Hamas includes a three-phase agreement over the span of four-and-a-half months where the militant group would release all hostages if Israel withdraws forces from Gaza. Israel’s military announced on Tuesday that 31 of the remaining hostages kept captive by Hamas were pronounced dead.
– Canada’s House of Commons passed a revised version of the Canada-Ukraine Free Trade Agreement (CUFTA) on Tuesday. The legislation received full support from all parties except the Conservatives, who objected due to references to carbon pricing. Ukraine has implemented a carbon tax since 2011 and the agreement only said that the two countries would co-operate to promote carbon pricing and measures to mitigate emissions. The legislation will go to the Senate for review.
– The offices of two election candidates in southwestern Pakistan were destroyed by bombs on Wednesday, killing at least 29 people the day before the country’s parliamentary elections. Both attacks were in the province of Baluchistan, which is home to insurgent and militia forces. An economic crisis and constant political discord are two major issues in this year’s elections.
