Global Markets: UN court orders Israel to prevent genocide

  • The United Nations’ top court on Friday ordered Israel to take measures to prevent genocide against Palestinians and do more to help civilians but stopped short of ordering a ceasefire in Gaza. The ruling in The Hague covered most of what South Africa had asked for in the case it brought forth. Israel had hoped the case would be thrown out, but it must now report back on its progress to the court within a month, although there is no way to enforce the legally binding decision.

  • A Kenyan-led UN mission to address gang violence in Haiti was blocked by Kenya’s high court on Friday, after a challenge from an opposition party, creating doubt over the future of the mission. Kenya had planned to send police officers as part of a multinational force to Haiti, where gang violence has killed nearly 5,000 people and displaced 200,000 people from their homes over the past year.

 

  • King Charles, 75, was admitted to hospital on Friday to undergo a corrective procedure for an enlarged prostate. His upcoming public engagements have been postponed.
