- The United States economy grew at a 3.3 per cent annualized rate in the fourth quarter of 2023, defying predictions for a recession, according to early data from the country’s Commerce Department released Thursday. Gross domestic product growth for the third quarter more than doubled expectations, at 4.9 per cent, with growth for the full year coming in at 2.5 per cent.

- Farmers in France continued to protest cheap imports and rising costs on Thursday blocking highways across the country and dumping foreign-grown vegetables. The country’s farmers union provided a list of 100 demands to the government including calls for better enforcement of payment laws and continued tax breaks for diesel fuel. Farmers in Germany, Poland and Romania have also held their own protests in recent weeks.
- Argentina’s largest union, CGT, together with other unions held a nationwide general strike on Wednesday protesting austerity measures and other proposals from the country’s newly elected libertarian President Javier Milei.
