Global Markets: Israeli attacks into Syria escalate

  • Israeli air strikes against Iranian targets in Syria have reportedly ramped up, with the heightened attacks on cargo trucks and infrastructure raising concerns over a wider conflict in the region.

 

  • Two United States fighter jets will fly over Bosnia on Monday as part of a training mission to mark the U.S. support for territorial integrity against ‘secessionist activity’ by nationalist pro-Russian separatist Serbs. “This bilateral training is an example of advanced military-to-military cooperation that contributes to peace and security in the Western Balkans, as well as demonstrates the United States’ commitment to ensuring the territorial integrity of Bosnia-Herzegovina in the face of anti-Dayton and secessionist activity,” according to a statement from the U.S. embassy in Sarajevo.

  • A major winter storm brought heavy snow and freezing rains to much of the northeastern United States, with thousands of people reportedly without power. Western parts of the country also saw adverse weather over the weekend, with highways closed in California, Nevada and Arizona.

 

  • Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina won a fourth consecutive term on Sunday, as opposition parties boycotted an election marred by dissent and violent protests. Hasina’s Awami League party won 224 out of 299 seats, according to reports, extending her 15-year rule.
