Global Markets: Canadian retail sales unchanged in November

– An advanced estimate from Statistics Canada (StatCan) released on Thursday morning suggested that retail sales were flat in November compared to the month before. Retail sales rose 0.7 per cent in October, slightly below a 0.8 per cent estimate from a survey of economists. Sales were up in seven of nine subsectors, including a 1.1 per cent gain for car and auto parts dealers. In terms of volume, retail sales were up 1.4 per cent in October.

– Striking teachers blocked the entrances to ports in Montreal and Quebec City on Thursday morning, saying negotiations with the Quebec government weren’t moving fast enough. Members of the Fédération autonome de l’enseignement (FAE) protested from 6 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. in Montreal, causing 500 to 800 trucks, approximately 25 per cent of the port’s morning traffic, to be unable to do business. The FAE rejected the Quebec government’s latest offer on Wednesday, extending the strike which has gone on for four weeks.

– The World Health Organization (WHO) named the JN.1 COVID-19 variant a “variant of interest” on Tuesday. Experts said that while it may be more evasive and infectious than other variants, it has not been proven to cause more severe disease. The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated that 15 to 29 per cent of COVID-19 cases as of Dec. 8 were caused by the variant.
