– New Brunswick is voting on a new provincial government today, after a snap election was called four weeks ago. Incumbent Progressive Conservative Premier Blaine Higgs has led a minority government for the past two years and is looking to gain a majority. The somewhat contentious election is the first being held in Canada amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
– Amid ongoing anti-government protests in Belarus, the country’s President, Alexander Lukashenko flew to Russia on Monday to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin to gain his support. Lukashenko has ruled the former Russian state for 26 years, but faces charges of rigging an election last month.
– Yoshihide Suga is set to become Japan’s new prime minister, replacing Shinzo Abe as head of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party. Members of Parliament and other party officials voted overwhelmingly in favour of the 71-year-old chief cabinet secretary. Abe resigned his position in August due to health concerns.
