– While most of the focus on African swine fever has been on its devastating effects on China’s hog industry, Vietnam has been desperately battling the disease that is almost always fatal to pigs. Since February, approximately 4.7 million hogs have been culled as African swine fever has spread to all of the country’s 63 provinces. The culling has translated to an 18.5 per cent drop in Vietnam’s hog population.

– More than 81,000 net jobs were created in Canada during August, according to a Statistics Canada report released on Friday. The gain far exceeded expectations of an increase of around 20,000 jobs. However, many of those jobs were part-time and the country’s unemployment rate was steady at 5.7 per cent last month. The report indicated there have been over 471,000 jobs added during the last 12 months. This will be the agency’s last major employment report before October’s federal election.
– Robert Mugabe, who ruled Zimbabwe for 37 years, has died at the age of 95 years. The schoolteacher turned independence leader became prime minister in 1980. In 1982, Mugabe became a dictator and remained power until he resigned two years ago. His rule was highlighted by violence, human rights abuses and economic mismanagement. The latter included severe food shortages in a country that once had been Africa’s second-largest corn producer.
