Kristie Demke says that when she goes to help clients organize their offices, it’s not unusual to find dusty how-to-get-organized books buried in the clutter. Clients lose these books through what she calls the I’ll-deal-with-it-later mindset, where, instead of dealing with something, they pile it.
The piling problem isn’t helped by technology, which make it easy to print unnecessary e-mails and reference information. Not only does unnecessary copying and printing waste space and time, she says, it then nags at us to be dealt with.

Think twice before printing, she advises. Ask yourself, “Do I need this hard copy?” And when you do have a hard copies, sort jobs into to-do bins (to read, to act, to file, to discard).
Demke says that most home-based business offices take less than 20 hours to organize completely, from clearing the work surfaces, to setting up an appropriate floor plan, to implementing a filing system. She says that’s 20 well-spent hours, because it’s easy to waste
