New in soybean varieties

New options will help the crop continue expanding its value and range

Canadian soybean production has grown up in the past 30 years. It seems a distant memory now that in 1985, Ontario was still the only major producer in the country, topping the million-tonne mark that year, well above the  average of 690,000 tonnes earlier that decade.

One year later, Quebec joined the market, and five years after that, the Maritimes began growing soybeans, followed by Manitoba in 2001 and Saskatchewan in 2013. According to Soy Canada, national production for 2014 was estimated at more than 6.0 million tonnes, with Manitoba vaulting past Quebec in the past years to become the second-leading soybean-producing province in the country.

This is why Country Guide is offering this latest in our “What’s new?” series for soybeans, featuring the newest varieties from 12 different companies, arranged aphabetically by company name. It’s a companion piece for any discussion you plan with your seed representative, dealer or adviser this fall.

Bayer CropScience

Balance GT — The Balance GT Soybean Performance System was developed through collaboration between MS Technologies and Bayer CropScience. Created using high-yielding, elite soybean genetics, Balance GT is intended to give growers exceptional performance coupled with outstanding weed control.

Balance GT soybeans will be tolerant to both glyphosate and isoxaflutole, the active ingredient in new Balance Bean herbicide. These two chemistries will protect against a variety of weeds, with exceptional performance against both broadleaf weeds and grasses, including difficult-to-manage weeds such as eastern black nightshade, waterhemp, and ragweed. Glyphosate can be used to combat weeds on contact while Balance Bean herbicide, with its unique reactivation feature, will continue to provide residual coverage from application through canopy closure.

Balance GT soybeans will be the first step in a foundational system that will grow to include a triple-stacked herbicide-tolerant soybean, providing tolerance to glyphosate, Balance Bean and Liberty.

The LibertyLink soybean system will be used as well to help manage glyphosate-resistant weeds. Through the LibertyLink soybean system, Bayer says it will bring a complete package of high-performing genetics coupled with powerful, non-selective weed control for glyphosate-resistant and tough-to-manage weeds that is also useful for effective resistance management, since Liberty is the only herbicide with a unique Group 10 mode of action.
